why we choose not to use essential oils

perfect for sensitive skin

Essential oils are highly concentrated and can be irritating—especially for sensitive skin, children, or anyone with compromised skin barriers. By using whole herbs and gentle infusions, we keep our products soothing and safe for all skin types.

whole plants, not isolated parts

We work with the full spectrum of a plant—its roots, flowers, leaves, and natural oils—rather than isolated constituents. Whole plant preparations offer a broader, more balanced range of benefits, just as nature intended.

better for the earth

It takes a massive amount of plant material to make a small amount of essential oil. We focus on sustainable practices by using herbs in their whole form, gently infused in oils.

gentle on you and your air quality

Essential oils are incredibly concentrated and volatile, meaning they quickly evaporate into the air. These compounds, called volatile organic compounds (VOCs), can contribute to indoor air pollution and may trigger headaches or respiratory irritation for some people. Constant exposure to fragrances and essential oils can also lead to scent desensitization.

respectful of your microbiome

Essential oils are powerful antimicrobial agents - as shown by many of their common uses - but that's not something you necessary want on your skin (or in the air you breathe) every day. Our skin and respiratory tract have their own microbiomes that support immune function and our overall health. Using antimicrobial substances too frequently may disrupt that balance, and most of us are working so hard to build up our good bacteria, not wipe it out

We make this choice because we craft our products with the intention that they are safe, gentle, and sustainable for everyone to use. Our ingredients list might be simpler and our scents more subtle, but that’s exactly the point.
